The School of Energy Science and Engineering (ESE), with its predecessor Jiaozuo Mining School established in 1909, is more than 100 years old, during which it evolved initially from Fuzhong Coal Mining University’s Mining and Metallurgy Department, to Jiaozuo Institute of Technology’s Mining and Metallurgy Department (private), National Jiaozuo Institute of Technology’s Mining Department, Jiaozuo Institute of Technology’s Mining Engineering Department, Jiaozuo Institute of Technology’s Resources and Materials Engineering Department, Henan Polytechnic University’ Resources and Materials Engineering Department, and finally to the School of Energy Resources and Engineering (ESE), Henan Polytechnic University in 2005.  

At present, there are 97 formal faculty members in ESE, one academician (Syd S. Peng , a member of US NAE), 23 doctoral student supervisors, 28 professors and 28 associate professors (or senior engineers), 74 of them have PhD degrees; it has a national-class mining engineering teaching team, two national safety production experts, one nationwide advanced individual on teacher’s ethic, one Henan provincial excellent expert, two top teaching teachers of Henan Province, three academic technical leaders of Henan Province, five excellent and civilization teachers of Henan Province and two first class Taihang scholars. Among them, many were inducted into or awarded with the Technological Innovation Talent Plan of Henan Province, Outstanding Youth Fund of Henan Province and Excellent Young and Mid-aged key teachers of Henan Province. Finally, several of them were awarded with the honor Advanced Individuals on Idealogical and Political Education and grand prize in the Counsellor’s Professional Ability Match of higher education of Henan Province.

ESE has a postdoctoral research station of mineral engineering doctoral program in first-class mineral engineering, MS in mineral engineering, management science and engineering, control science and first class engineering, and MS in mineral engineering and industrial engineering; Among them, the PhD in Mineral engineering is the first PhD program for first class majors at HPU.The Mining Engineering of HPU, which belongs to the Provincial Key Discipline (Level 1), was judged as an A grade by the Ministry of Education. The mineral engineering curriculum is the firs class key curriculum in Henan Province. ESE has 9 provincial teaching and research platforms, including State and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for Gas Drainage & Ground Control of Deep Mine, Science and Technology Support Platform for Ground Control of Deep Mines and Gas Drainage of State Administration of Work Safety, Henan Key Laboratory for Green and Efficient Mining & Comprehensive Utilization of Mineral Resources, Joint International Research Laboratory for Coal Mine Ground Control of Henan Province, Henan Academician Workstation for Coal Mine Modern Mining and Ground Control, and The National Coal Mining Virtual Simulation Experiment Teaching Center. It also has 5 technological innovation teams, covering Coalbed Methane Engineering Team, Mining Damage and Protection TeamGround Control in Deep Coalmines Team, Gas Drainage with Specialized Equipment in Coalmines Team, and Development and Application of Grouting and Filling Materials.

There are three undergraduate majors in ESE, mining engineering (including coal and coalbed methane emphasis), industrial engineering, and transportation. Mining engineering, with a history of more than 100 years, is a major featured with traditional superior quality. It is also one of the first group of national-class featured majors, a national-class comprehensive pilot reform major, a pilot major for training excellent engineer education of the Ministry of Education. It is also the first major at HPU that received accreditation for national engineering education accreditation. It ranked No 4 in 2015 among the 51 universities/colleges in China that offered mining engineering. It is listed on the A class majors in China. It developed two national excellent and national resource sharing courses: Introduction to Coal Mining and Mining Damages and Protection.    

Currently, there are 1872 undergraduates, 185 MS and 34 PhD and on-campus postdoctorals at ESE. It has graduated more than 30,000 undergraduate degree and 2,000 advanced degrees. Over the years, ESE has produced many excellent alumni entering the society and become well-known alumni and distinguished professionals such as Zhang Tiegang.  

In the last 5 years, more than 100 national and local research projects, 680 research projects for coal mine enterprises, and about 10 national and provincial teaching quality projects, covering the National Mega Projects of Science Research, National 973 Projects, key projects from NSFC, and Doctoral Scientific Fund Projects, have been accomplished. The total funding is more than 150 million. There are one second-class National Science and Technology Progress Award, 68 ministerial science and technology progress awards, 4 national and provincial teaching awards, more than 300 high-guality papers indexed by SCI, EI or CSSCI, and about 150 national patents for invention.

ESE devotes itself to promoting international academic exchanges and cooperation. Relationship has been established with West Virginia University and University of Kentucky in USA, University of Wollongong in Australia, McGill University in Canada, and Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil.
